Kids area
MOTOR SKILLS FOR KIDS - SOME IDEAS FOR YOU
Gross motor activities
  • Pushing/ carrying items (heavy or light)
  • Helping out with chores around the house (vacuuming, mopping, cleaning etc.)
  • Large exercise ball activities (Rolling on belly, bouncing, rolling on back, balancing, putting weight out onto arms while keeping feet balanced on the ball and rolling ball)
  • Thera-band activities (on separate sheet)
  • Regular movement breaks (youtube movement videos such as cosmic kids yoga, www.gonoodle.com, zumba etc….following the movements on screen and copying them)
  • All sports: Throwing, catching, kicking, passing a ball using feet
  • Balancing activities: walking along a line, a bench etc.
  • Pillow fights
  • Wheelbarrow walks (strengthen muscles in arms)
  • Walking, running, hopping, yogging, walking backwards, moving in different directions (all done at different paces- fast/slow)
  • Punch bag
  • Jumping on trampoline
  • Throwing things at a target (basketballs, footballs, beanbags) (small basketball set in euro shop)
  • Regular visits to  parks
  • Baking: measuring, sieving, mixing, spooning mixture etc.
  • Keeping a balloon afloat off the ground
  • Boot camp exercises (marching, hopping, squatting, lunging etc.)
Fine motor activities
  • Cutting with scissors
  • Pegboards
  • Threading activities
  • Placing clothes pegs onto and taking off a container
  • Playdough /Theraputty (hide small coins inside to be retrieved)
  • Stacking unifix cubes together to make a tower
  • Clay (rolling, squishing, molding, creating forms)
  • Squeezing and ringing out sponges
  • Scrunching paper, tearing paper, gluing paper
  • Construction activities e.g. lego
  • Puzzles
  • Games such as jenga (big blocks), connect 4, hungry hippos etc.
  • Bubble wrap
  • Colouring, drawing, writing
  • Stringing beads
  • Using tweezers to lift small items
